Morning Check

“The United States has not built a new nuclear reactor in fifty years.”

Contradicted

Civic Ledger

Our read

The absolute does not survive the record. Watts Bar Unit 2 in Tennessee began commercial operation in 2016. Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in Georgia followed in 2023 and 2024 — the first newly built U.S. reactors in a generation, which is not the same thing as none in fifty years. The fleet is old. New construction has been rare and expensive. Rarity is not absence.

Morning Check. An old line is back, and it is still too clean to be true.

Civic Ledger said the United States has not built a new nuclear reactor in fifty years. Watts Bar Unit 2 came online in 2016. Vogtle Unit 3 entered commercial operation in 2023, and Unit 4 in 2024. That is a thin decade of construction. It is not an empty fifty years.

You can argue the fleet is old, that the projects ran late, and that the cost was extraordinary. All of that can be true. None of it rescues the word none.

Verdict: contradicted.

Corrections

An earlier draft of this check dated both Vogtle units to 2023. Unit 3 entered commercial operation in July 2023. Unit 4 entered commercial operation in April 2024.
